Editor’s note: Yeah, I so a lot of stuff for Silverline. But my opinion is my own.
Issue #1 recap: Dan Taylor, AKA, The Champion or to some, the Chicago Champion goes with his friend, Woody to New Orleans after an encounter with two thugs named Pistol and Nym within a burning building. Dan overcame them while noticing his strength had been increasing and agreed to the trip with Woody to get away from Chicago and personal matters with his ex-wife and daughter for awhile. He comes across them later in the issue, now wearing armor and is overtaken when they bust a water tower and floods the area he was in. We’re also introduced to Marley Hale, a single mom looking for a job in New Orleans while she’s trying to establish herself as the new Ms. Fury.
Issue #2: Roland Mann, Peter Clinton, Tommy Florimonte and Roberta Conroy bring us back into New Orleans. Our heroes cross paths when Ms. Fury pulls Champion from the water. Pistol and Nym, while upped in power due to the armor, haven’t upscaled their intelligence. The book starts steeped in action. Peter and Tommy’s artwork has only gotten better and slicker since the first issue. Roberta’s color adds so much attitude and mood to the streets of New Orleans.
In the early pages, we get a treat with an old friend from the Silverline universe and as of late Cat and Mouse. I’ll let the image previews speak for themselves on his identity.
Ms Fury and her new friend put off the two thugs as Champion tries to recover in the background. If you like your heroes in good smackdowns, this fight is for you.
After the fight, the issue turns personal really quickly and the two stars of the issue deal with issues both familiar and shocking.
Dan (Champion) while trying to recover from his fight, is blindsided by something pulled right from our world’s headlines. It hits hard and it’s impact is felt quickly.
Silverline Team Up #2 feels like a comic you could have read in the 70s and the 80s, but immediately feels at home now. Full of personality and scale. Roland’s story moves fast and glides through to the emotional ending.
I’ve been a fan of Pete’s art since the first time I saw it. His storytelling is so solid and he’s only gotten better between issues.
As a reader that has been looking forward to this release, I wasn’t disappointed. A good superhero tale that gets you right on level with the heroes, while living through their wins and hard to imagine losses.
